Some of my favorite childhood memories involve a messy kitchen table, a rolling pin, and a batch of salt dough. It’s the ultimate rainy day (or snow day) activity because you likely have everything you need in your pantry right now.
This isn’t a recipe for eating—it’s extremely salty!—but it creates durable, paintable ornaments that can last for years if stored properly.
The Magic Ratio: 2:1:1
Memorize this ratio, and you’ll never need to look up the recipe again.
- 2 Parts All-Purpose Flour
- 1 Part Table Salt
- 1 Part Water (Warm water works best)
Instructions
1. Mix the Dough
In a large bowl, mix the flour and salt. Slowly add the water, stirring as you go. Once it gets too tough to stir, get your hands in there! Knead the dough on a counter for about 5-10 minutes until it’s smooth and pliable.
- Tip: If it’s too sticky, add more flour. If it’s crumbly, add a splash more water.

2. Roll and Cut
Roll the dough out to about 1/4 inch thickness. Use cookie cutters to make your shapes.
- Don’t Forget the Hole! Use a drinking straw to punch a hole at the top of each ornament before you bake it. You’ll need this for the ribbon later.
3. Bake (Low and Slow)
Preheat your oven to 250°F (120°C). Place ornaments on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Bake for 2-3 hours. You aren’t cooking them; you are drying them out. They should be hard to the touch when done.
4. Cool and Paint
Let them cool completely. Then, unleash the creativity! Acrylic paints work best. You can also use glitter, markers, or stamps.
5. Seal (Crucial Step)
To make them last, you must seal them. Once the paint is dry, coat the entire ornament (front and back) with a clear spray sealer or Mod Podge. This prevents moisture from getting back in and making them soggy.
Creative Ideas
- Handprints: Make a keepsake of your child’s handprint (great gift for grandparents!).
- Essential Oils: Add a few drops of cinnamon or pine oil to the dough for scented ornaments.
- Texture: Press lace or leaves into the dough before baking for a sophisticated textured look.
Happy crafting!
